Introduction Letter
August, 2011

Dear Parents,

As the school year approaches, we would like to welcome you and your children to the Nathaniel Bowditch School.    We are excited as we count down the days to the beginning of the school year and the opportunity to meet your children.

Always read notices that are sent home with your child.
This is important information.

1. Safety

For the safety of your child they should know the following:

                •  first and last name
                •  telephone number
                •  address
                •  parents names
                •  regular mode of transportation at dismissal unless we receive a  note or call from the parents indicating a change

2.  Attendance
Attendance is one of the most important factors in your child’s education.  Please send your child to school everyday unless he/she is sick.  Attendance effects child’s academic progress and is an important factor in determining their academic success.        If your child misses a day of school or arrives late, please send a note of explanation.  This is a school rule.

3.  Health

It will benefit your child to get a good nights sleep.  The appropriate hour for kindergarten students to go to sleep is between 7:00 and 7:30 p.m.

4.  Clothing

It is important to send your child to school in comfortable clothing that they are able
to button and unbutton themselves.  Kindergarten students are very active.  Note that   they will be painting, sitting on the floor and playing outside.  It is preferred that your child wear sneakers daily.  They are safer for climbing the stairs, playing on      the playground  and they are required for Physical Education class.  Without
sneakers your child will not be able to participate in Physical Education class.  We    ask that you send your children to  school wearing play clothes in order not to ruin good clothing.

We ask you to please mark your child’s outer clothing and uniform with their name.  It is often impossible to differentiate between uniforms that are not labeled.  In case of accidents we are asking that you send an extra change of clothing with your child in a plastic bag with their name marked on it.  We try to go out to recess daily.  Please send your child to school with clothing appropriate for the weather.

5.  Food

•School lunch includes food and milk and may be purchased for $2.25 per day.  Milk can be purchased for .50 per day.  If you feel that you may be eligible to receive free lunch, a questionnaire will be available at the beginning of the school year.  If your child does not receive free lunch, you will be responsible for sending      a lunch from home or purchasing a school lunch. Money   should be sent to school in an envelope with your child’s name on it.  Your child may pay for school lunch daily      or if you prefer you may pay on Monday for the entire week.

6.  What else is needed?

        • We will be sending your child home with a  tag indicating how he/she goes home.
This tag will assist in the dismissal of your child.  Please continue to send this tag with your child for the first few weeks of school.  Bus drivers are not permitted to     drop kindergarten children off at their stop unless there is a parent or responsible adult waiting there.

        • Your child will need a large backpack  so that their work, lunch and notices can fit inside.  Small backpacks are not adequate.

7.  Lost and Found

If your child has lost something, please send a note describing the lost article.  In   addition if you find something at home that doesn’t belong to your child for example  a pencil, a sweater, a book or a game please return it to school.  It is very common for children to want to use school things at home.  Please help us to remind them to leave these things in school so everyone can  use them.

8.  Money  $$$

If you send money to school with your child, please send it in an envelope with the following written:
                        -your child’s name
                        -classroom number
                        -the purpose of the money

9.  Birthdays

On the last day of each month, the three kindergarten classes will come together to celebrate the students’ birthdays that occur in that  month  with song, cards and a special sticker. Summer birthdays will be celebrated in June.  Please do not send cake or cupcakes.

10.  Communication
During the first week of school your child will be receiving a purple homework folder.  Please send all written communication via this folder and check it each day for notices and homework.
